The researchers at the Environmental Working Group in America have taken the guess work out of finding out the toxicity of ingredients used in cosmetics. They have come up with a unique rating system so you can compare different ingredients, products and brands for safety.

Each ingredient is given a hazard score in regards to whether it poses risks for cancer, developmental/reproductive toxicity, whether there are any violations/restrictions or warnings, allergies and immunotoxicity and contamination concerns amongst others. These individual scores are then tallied and an average total score is then given to each product. Some ingredients are only toxic if they are used excessively, so this database also takes into account the percentages in which the ingredients are incorporated.
